A Brief Break From Yarn...

I taking a brief break from yarn talk to congratulate America on a great choice for our new president. Bush is gone (thank god) and Obama is in! I had my apprehension at first...and time will tell if those apprehensions show themselves again...but at this very moment.... I am proud. I think we made a good choice here, America. Way to go!

Cotton Wash Pad

So...I decided to take a break from the throw and experiment a little. I saw this really cool cotton dish cloth pattern that I just had to try. So I bought some Sugar n' Cream yarn and set out to make it! Except...I got confused... since I just started reading patterns...

So...I decided to make a sponge look-a-like. Enter wash pad!  It was so easy... easier than choosing Geico. All I did was single crochet a few rows making one small rectangle...and then I made another small rectangle of equal size and single crocheted the two together. Ta-da! WASH PAD!

Eventually...I will be able to read those silly patterns...until then...it is improvised inspiration.

The next improvised creation is going to be a bag based on the Larger the Life bag that appeared in Interwoven Crochet Spring 2007....which I can't actually find. (not for lack of trying). I have some idea's churning in my head...

On a different non-yarn related project, I have potentially developed a new, eco-friendly way to reuse some old t-shirts that I can't bear to get rid of. I am not going to say it just yet...but I am working on a prototype right now...stay tuned!

Connecticut River SnB and Granny Square Throw - Days 5-6

Today...I finally ventured over to It's a Grind (a local coffee house)...and I went to my very first Stich and Bitch. Oh boy! I was soooo nervous. Ever since I started to really become involved in the fiber world, I have wanted to get invovled in a stich and bitch group. After finally getting my ass in gear, I am glad I went!

Right after Thanksgiving, I walked into It's a Grind on my way home after a Black Friday party. On my out, I noticed there was a woman spinning yarn...which I thought was neat. One of the women in the circle told me she liked my scraf...and then asked if i made it. I told her I had and they started telling me about their group...which I immediatly knew was a SnB...and I was stoked! However, life got the better of me and I just couldn't make it to any of the meetings.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. Again...at Its a Grind...just chillin' out with my crochet. A woman ventured over to see what I was working on...and then told me about the SnB (again). Once again...I had a renewed interest in the group. She also told me about Ravelry...which I went home and immediatly requested an invite. Once there...I joined the online version of the group...as a way to scope them out. The holidays and finals prevented me from going to an actual meeting...but today...today I knew it was time.

I purpously waited until 1 to head over there...knowing the meeting "ended" at 2. I wanted an easy out in case the group wasn't for me, since I am not much of a club person to begin with. I made it there at about 1:30...walk up to the window to ensure they were still inside...grabbed my stuff and headed in. I made a grand entrance and then was surprised to be welcomed with open arms. I can already tell that I am going to like this group and I can't wait to go back on Thursday for the next meeting!

I was able to get a little more done on one granny square. I am almost done with it and am ready to move on to the next one. I don't have an end number yet...we shall see! I am going to start hitting it hardcore so I can be done with it in the next week or two. This will make it easier to move on to other projects.

I am still having a bitch of a time reading patterns. I found several I really want to do...but I am very confused by the patterns. I am going to study up a little more.

Happy hooking!

Granny Square Throw - Days 3 and 4

No progress has been made on the throw whatsoever! I haven't had the time and my crochet session yesterday turned into a learning session. I was able to pick up a few new stiches! Learned how to increase and decrease and to corchet in a spiral (thanks to my friend Heather). Also, I learned how to (finally!) read a pattern! Now, I have ton more projects I am itching to start! I can't wait! I am already dubbing 2009 as the year of crochet!

I want to wish everyone a happy new year! Be safe!

Granny Square Throw - Day 1

Hello all! I am once again attempting to write a blog. i have many floating out in cyberspace...mostly with 2 entries or less. Now, however, I feel I have finally found something to blog about! I finally have a hobby! Yay!

I entered the world of crochet as a way to stop smoking (it hasn't cured that thus far...but it helps). It took a while to get into it, but now I am hooked (pun very much intended)! I am still terrified of knitting (two needles instead on one....ooooooo.....props to those who can knit). After making many, many scarfs...I finally taught myself the granny square. Oh boy...I am happy I did!

My newest project is my biggest project to date. I am attempting to make a granny square throw. Since I can't read patterns yet, I am doing this by feel. This going to be a major task, since i don't have long to complete it as it is a Chrsitmas gift for my aunt.

The color pallet is actaully my favorite: orange and brown. I have one really big square made right now. All of the squares will have a yellow center. Some will be made with a light rust color, to a terracotta color to burgandy; the others will have a toffee, to chocolate to espresso pallet. The goal is to have 2 big squares in the orange color regiem surrounded by the brown, with a border in the orange. I am really excited to get started with this! It looks good in my head...I just hope it translates! It is my goal to post pictures of the progress!
